An Artist in the Country
Here is an excerpt of the article first published in the Australian Poetry Journal, click on the text to read the full article:
My shift from urban to rural living meant my rather complacent and flailing desire to be artist was honed sharp by the envy
of all that I´d left behind: the opportunities, the culture, the people, the immersion. I grieved that through laziness and a lack of confidence I had let opportunity pass. I was frustrated by my apparently banal surrounds and angry at my own ineptitude. I rallied against what I saw as a lack of understanding of contemporary art and writing, and a love of all things seventies. I bemoaned that every creative community event´s theme centred on living in the country as if there weren´t any other experiences to draw on and I loathed persistent paintings of galahs.
